Heroic Teacher in the Bronx

I was very touched when I read an article in the UFT Teacher paper about a Bronx teacher who saved a child’s life. Laura Pagoada, a 5th grade ESL teacher at PS 75 in the Bronx saw one of her students choking and used the Heimlich Maneuver to save the child’s life. She had not been trained in CPR, and had only seen a poster illustrating the Heimlich Maneuver by the nurse’s office in school. I can only imagine how grateful the little boy’s parents are whose life was saved by this courageous teacher. I have long thought that teachers should be trained in CPR in case of emergencies; perhaps one day CPR training will be a required part of teacher certification. I shudder to think of what might have happened if this brave teacher didn’t take action, if she hadn’t done what needed to be done. The teachers at P.S. 75 are saying that Laura Pagoada is a hero, I have to agree.
