FAQs

Where does the tutoring take place?
Our expert NY tutors come to you at your convenience. They can travel to your home or business within the NYC area or Long Island to work with the student. This is very beneficial for working families who are limited in time; you don’t have to drive anywhere since our tutors come to you! We require that a parent or guardian over the age of 21 be at home for the entire tutoring session. For students over the age of 16, we also offer tutoring at your local library or coffee house.

How is Prima Tutoring different than a learning center?
Our tutors come directly to you, so you don’t have to drive anywhere! They can also meet you in the library or coffee house (for students 16 years of age and older). Our prices are more reasonable and competitive than learning centers which can be very expensive. Our dedicated New York tutors will design a program for your child that is based on their school’s curriculum, not a pre-determined program that may not relate at all to what your child is learning in school. We will also communicate with your child’s teacher, if necessary, to ensure that the tutoring sessions supplement the student’s work in school.

Does Prima Tutoring supply any learning materials for the tutoring sessions?
Our tutors do come prepared with materials for the subject matter taught. However, we highly recommend that your child bring home their school books or any other materials they are working on in school that relates to the subject(s) that we are tutoring. Although our tutors will provide a material if it complements what your child is learning, we do not provide a curriculum. If necessary, we will direct you to several resources where you can purchase the appropriate books, etc.

What are your tutors’ qualifications?
Our tutors are teachers, college graduates and honors college students that are experienced in a variety of subjects and standard test preparation. They will help students attain their goals, gain self-confidence, and acquire solid study techniques to ensure academic success. We check all references, obtain background checks and personally interview every tutor.

What if my child doesn’t like the tutor?
If, after the first session is complete, you do not think the tutor is a good match with your child, please let us know and we will assign another tutor. We do encourage the student to give the tutor at least one more opportunity to get to know the tutor, as they become more familiar with the tutor they may find they enjoy working with them.

Are there a minimum number of sessions for which I have to commit and how long is each session?
No, we do not have any long-term contracts; however, we strongly suggest a minimum of five to six sessions in order to begin to see progress. The minimum amount of time for each session is one hour.

Do your tutors work with learning disabled or special needs children?
Yes, some of our tutors are Special Needs experienced and/or certified and will be able to work in conjunction with your child’s I.E.P. or 504 Plan.

I have more than one child. Can you tutor all of them at the same time?
Yes, we do provide group tutoring. We can tutor siblings, classmates or friends in the same session. There is a 50% discount for each additional child. We do not recommend having a tutor work with more than 3 children at a time.

How long do I have to wait to get a tutor assigned to my child?
Our Executive Director will contact one of our tutors within 48 hours. We will call you to tell you about the tutor. The tutor will then contact you for an introduction, get directions to your home and establish a schedule that works for you.

Do you tutor students in college?
Yes, we have tutors who are very capable of tutoring college level courses. College students can be tutored at home, on campus or in the library or local coffee house.

What geographical areas do you service?
Our tutoring and test preparation service currently serves NYC’s 5 boroughs (Queens, Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Staten Island) and Long Island.

Do you provide test preparation for the SAT and ACT tests?
Yes, our expert tutors will help your student prepare for these exams. We highly recommend that you contact us at least six weeks before the test so our tutors have enough time to help the student prepare. Although we only require one hour a week of tutoring, our experience has been that at least two hours a week for test prep is the most effective.

We offer test preparation for the following exams: NYS ELA, NYS Math, ACT, ASVAB, CLEP, COOP, GED, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, NTE, PSAT, RCT, SAT, SSAT, TOEFL and all other high school and college standardized exams.

How much does the tutoring cost? and how do I pay?
